Cast stone mantles have the same look and feel of a limestone mantle but it's less expensive.  Stone mantles are maintenance free and as a non-combustible material, they are suitable for metal as well as masonry fireboxes, for gas inserts or traditional wood-burning.  Intricate designs can be done to a stone mantel at a fraction of the cost.

You should clean your stone mantle with a solution of 25% muriatic acid and 75% clean water.  Be sure to wear gloves to protect your hands.  Clean one small area at a time and use a soft brush and a sponge for applying the clean water.

Stone mantels can be painted with regular latex paint.  Stone mantles may also be stained using extremely diluted latex paint - 25% paint to 75% water.  Stone mantels can also be faux finished.
